|
Leptospirosis is classified as direct anthoropozoonosis.
The infecting agent is Leptospira. Leptospirosis has a worldwide distribution. It
has been known as well's disease, mud-fever, trench fever, ricefield fever, cane
cutter's fever, swamp fever, flood fever, etc.

DETECTION AND TREATMENT
|
|
After an incubation period of 2-17 days, a paranormal phase
commences which is marked by fever, headache, myalgia and arthralgia. In persons
20-30 years of age and men suffer more because of greater occupational exposure
to infected animals and contaminated environment. In persons 20-30 years of age

and contaminated environment. Infection is acquired through contact with environment
contaminated with urine of an animal who is a carrier or is suffering from disease
caused by leptospirosis. Infection may also arise from bathing or accidental immersion
in the fresh water of lakes, rivers or canals contaminated with the urine of the
infected livestock that has been using the water for drinking or swallow. Water
may also get contaminated with rodent nests located on the river banks especially
after heavy rainfalls and inundations. Direct transmission is rare

PRECAUTION |
1. Water purification with chlorine
2. Proper drainage is the most radical means of sanitation.
3. Bathing may be hazardous in rat-infected areas.
4. Skin abrations should not be exposed as they serve us portal of entry for infection.
5. Control of rodent by rat poisoning or by slow acting rodenticides.
6. Water proof shoes and gloves should be used while working in leptofoci. Therefore,
the anti rodent measures constitute an essential component of control of leptospyrosis.

FACILITIES |
1.Treatment facility is available in all the Government
hospitals, since the required medicines like Pencilline, Streptomycin, and Tetracycline
are widely available in all health institutions.
2. Diagnostic facility available only at NICD,NTI Campus, Bangalore.
